STUDIES
AT THE INSTITUTE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION
Mr.
AWASOM ROLAND ANYE Speech from IHRE Director of studies
I am delighted that you are considering our institution for your academic
ambition and career goal. To succeed in the 21st century, today’s students
must develop the competence to effectively function in a global environment.
We have revised and
we will still continue to revise our curriculum to respond to the present
and future needs of the global environment. We will continue to develop
new courses in the coming years. Apart of the bilingual nature of Cameroon,
we emphasize foreign
language proficiency because language provides much more than the ability
to communicate:
It is a window to another culture in addition to providing the insights
about values, and one’s perception of reality. The programmes offered strives
to prepare students for the challenges of today and tomorrow in a variety
of ways
EDUCATION
One of the major aims of the Institute for Human Rights Education is to
encourage education; we have been assisting the community in the provision
of educational facilities and educating the populace on issues of human
rights, health and
development. Each year our organisation provides four Partial scholarships
to Cameroonian Human Rights Education students who wish to continue their
education at home or abroad. The institution ensures that student sent
abroad return home after completing their studies to share the knowledge,
culture and experience that they acquired in their studies abroad. The
foundation has a scholarship board responsible for the selection of scholarship
awardees from the seven Universities in
the country, scholarship awardees are selected on the bases of academic
and financial need, while the education investment board are responsible
for the provision of financial and material assistance to educational institution
by providing books to libraries and also constructing benches, chairs,
tables, and class rooms to institutions with limitations. Our organisation
also provides opportunities to volunteers interested in studying international
relations and law, religion/ethics and morality. These courses are free
and are taught along side Human Rights Education. This gives the opportunity
for participants to be admitted into our human rights activist group.
Our courses and progremmes operate all year round with equal opportunities
to all a pplicants and students. After completing of our programme courses
a Diploma in Human Rights is issued for six to nine months course
and a higher Diploma in Human Rights Education is issued after two years
programme.
Training programme for Trainers
Introduction
Institute for Human Rights Education and training
centre
In 2001 the Institute for Human Rights Education, in Cameroon developed
a training programme to train trainers in human rights, democratic process
and basic conflict management. The programme was designed as a result of
the increasing rate
of conflict in Africa and the rest of the world. Many seminars have been
held in Buea on democracy and human rights. But the feeling was that the
same people tended to go to the seminars and that not much activity actually
came out of them.
A different approach was needed and there was a wish to reach people outside
of Buea and the rest of the world as well as people who normally didn't
attend these kinds of seminars. At the same time people who would be willing
to make a
commitment to further work would be located and invited into the process.
A model for training for trainers was therefore developed which sought
to give basic training in the areas of conflict management, human rights
and democratic process
and to give participants the opportunity to design, plan and run workshops,
with experienced facilitators as co-facilitators or observers/advisors.
Objectives
The Objective of IHRE Training Progammes
· To contribute to positive social change and peacebuilding
· To empower local capacities in the area of conflict management,
human rights, democratic process and Community/project management
· To train teams of trainers that can organise and run their own
workshops and seminars after the our training programme
· Give participants experience in project management These objectives
are met in the training for trainers programme through a process of training
and co-facilitation, which gradually hands over skills and competence tothe
trainees within a very clearly defined exit strategy. Seminars will also
look at possibilities for projects for change within communities, institutions
etc.
Part one of the Training Programme
In this phase of event IHRE will consult with other organisers on the specific
planned outcomes, the content, strategies for peacebuilding etc. The organisers
of the training for trainers programme will identify, select and invite
participants who
will take part in the programme (see selection criteria below). They also
locate and book an appropriate venue, set dates for the first training
with IHRE trainers as well as other preparatory matters. The duration of
this phase will vary depending on
whether funding is available or not.
Part two of the Training Programme
The first training
The first training normally lasts seven days. It will begin with a consultation
with participants on needs, expectations and contributions as well as matters
relevant to their situation and the people they will later be training.
The training will then cover
topics such as basic conflict management, communication skills, negotiation,
basic human needs, human rights, democratic process as well as project
management and workshop design. Trainer teams will be formed to work on
the latter which will be
the teams which will plan and implement their own workshops. Participants
will also be provided with an updated manual, which will cover the topics
of the workshop and describe exercises used during the training.
Part three of the programme
Workshop planning
In this third phase the trainer teams will work together to complete preparations
for the workshop to be held in part IV. Teams will:
· Complete a draft workshop programme
· Draft and finalise budget for workshop
· Book a venue for the workshop
· Draft workshop invitation and/or advertisement
· Distribute invitations
· Select and confirm participants
· Design evaluation and method for measurement of change This will
of course require teams to meet and work together over a month or two (the
exact time frame will be agreed on together with IHRE trainers and organisers
at the first workshop). They will have the opportunity to communicate as
needed with IHRE trainers and to get coaching and advice from these by
e-mail and through the IHRE web site.
Part four of the programme
Participants' workshops
In this phase the workshops planned in the last two phases will be carried
out. Teams will first meet with IHRE trainers for a day to finalise workshop
programme and who will do what, and discuss concerns and needs of trainer
teams. The workshops will then be held from Monday to Wednesday, evaluation
and discussion with all teams will then be held to consolidate the learning
from this
experience. After the IHRE training programme a report on the workshops
will be written with comments and suggestions about the role of the trainers,
the exercises, learning outcomes etc. for the benefit of the participants.
These workshops can be
run by the participants themselves with observation on the part of the
IHRE trainers or in co-facilitation with IHRE trainers. This will depend
on the readiness of the participants. If co-facilitation is decided on
then an extra phase will be added to allow trainees to run further workshops
with IHRE trainers as observers. After these workshops IHRE trainers
will still be available to give advice to new trainers but at this stage
they will pull out of the project. In previous training for trainers programmes
run in Buea and Kumba many kinds of workshops have been run by the participants.
Previous workshop topics have been human rights and democratic process,
organisational development and networking, negotiation, children and conflict
management, community development and conflict management.
Part four of the programme
Continued training
In this final phase the new trainers will plan and run at least two
additional workshops. These could be longer or shorter workshops and can
be the same or different as the workshops run in part IV. The trainers
may choose to continue working in the same teams or they may divide up
into pairs or form new teams
IHRE will do the following:
· Be in communication with other organisers of the Training for
trainers programme and be available to discuss and answer questions about
the programme and the preparations. Be able to advise participants on any
questions they may have about
the programme.
· Run the first 7-day seminar in different phases.
· Be available to advise and coach training teams during part III
and will work by e-mail directly with the teams in finalising their workshop
programmes, invitations etc.
· Co-facilitate and/or observe the new trainers while they run their
workshops in part IV.
· Write an evaluation of the workshops for the benefit of the learning
of the newtrainers.
· Be available to give advice during part V.
Participants who take part in the Training for trainers programme must
show a commitment and willingness to participate and contribute to the
programme course/events. They must be willing to work as trainers, to run
their own workshops in the final phase and preferably wish to continue
training after this.
Criteria for Selecting participants
The most important criteria for participation in the Training for trainers
programme are motivation and willingness to actively train and contribute
to all phases of the programme. In addition to this we encourage our organisation
to include equal
numbers of men and women. It can also be an advantage that participants
come from different parts of the country including villages. An even geographical
distribution or a balance between participants from major cities and smaller
towns
gives the group diversity and strength and may make it easier to provide
training in towns outside the big centres. In countries where there are
several ethnic groups it is useful to include people from all ethnic groups
where this is possible and to
consider a balance of age groups as well. In the latter case though, if
the focus is on youth work then obviously most or all of the participants
will probably be young.
